Fillet Weld for Socket Fittings

A fillet weld is defined as a weld is attaching two surfaces approximately at right angles which are generally triangular cross-section to each other in various joints like T-joint, a lap joint, or corner joint. The Fillet weld is a suitable method to connect slip-on flanges or socket weld fittings to pipes. This welding is done by connecting the toes, the face, the legs, the throat, and the root. Fillet welds is not a continuous process, but it can be done in parts or by taking a gap. This weld is not significantly confined to the individual side of the segments to be joined. Fillets welds can be done on both the opposite side as well as the arrow side of the components. The main feature of this weld is that it can be continuous or intermittent. This makes it more preferable for Socket fittings. Socket Fittings required specific types of weld with unique requirements, and Fillet weld is most suitable for it.

Types of Fillet weld

The three basic types of fillet weld which are required for socket fittings and they are lap joint, tee joint, and corner joint. All these types of weld have different features.

  • Lap Joint

Lap joint type of fillet weld is useful to weld many pieces with different thicknesses. For this joint, two parts or pieces are laid over each other like overlapping. Lap joint can be applied on either only one side or also on both sides for extra toughness. This type of joint is widely used in a laser beam, electron beam, and even in resistance spot welding. Lap joint fillet weld for socket fittings includes different styles to make it more effective. These styles are such as Spot, Plug, Slot, Bevel-groove, J-groove, and Flare-bevel groove. Lap Joint welds are preferred for an effective welding process.

  • Tee Joint

A tee joint is a unique type of fillet weld which forms only when two parts are interested at a 90-degree angle with each other. In this case, one edge lies in the middle of the other. During this joint, as the name suggests, two parts have to be placed in the shape of the letter T. Tee joint needs to apply fillet weld on both sides of the metal. This type of fillet weld can additionally be used when a pipe is united on a base metal. Tee joint fillet weld includes seven styles of welding for a significant result. These styles are such as Slot weld, Fillet weld, Bevel-groove weld, Plug weld, Flare-bevel-groove weld, J-groove weld, and Melt-through weld.

  • Corner Joint

Corner joints types of a fillet weld is popular types in the sheet metal industry. It is beneficial to use for constructing boxes and frames and also for many such applications. Corner joint weld is applied when at the centre of a right angle, two parts come together. These two parts include the shape of the letter L. To create a corner joint, there are different styles such as V-groove, U-groove, J-groove, Edge, Corner-flange, Square-groove or butt, Spot, Bevel-groove, and Flare-V-groove.
