What is Flow Metering Skid (FMS)?

A process line’s metering skid is used to check if the output from one process to another complies with the parameters set, and a custody transfer metering skid is used when the product is transferred from the custody of one entity to another. It is more noticeable when it comes to custody transfers because it is imperative that the measurement be as precise as possible to prevent disputes, especially when there are external parties and, more significantly, when money is involved. The equipment on the skid works together to measure the product’s quantity, quality, pressure, mixing, and filtration process, and does so in order to produce the most accurate readings.

A framed or moduled device known as a “flow metering skid” is equipped with different additional assemblies to measure the flow rates of liquid or gaseous products. A metering skid is mostly used for custody transfer. They are created and developed to have the least amount of uncertainty. They simultaneously reduce operating and maintenance expenses. The metering skid is equipped for lifting, proving, sampling, draining, venting, safety, maintenance, flow conditioning, filtering, automated or manual operational sequences, and other tasks. These skids or packages measure the mass or volumetric flow rates in accordance with the client’s specifications. This package can also be used for additional treatments like flow control and fluid cleaning depending on the measurement needs.

Components of FMS

  • the skid’s supporting elements and structural framework
  • The pipe system
  • Process equipment that is relevant
  • The electrical power supply, which includes the earthing system, the MCC, and all cables and trays.
  • The local instrumentation and control system, which consists of the PLC, flow computer, and personal computers as well as printers.

Purpose of FMS

  • methods for adjusting fuel gas
  • border metering stations
  • Metering of liquids and gases offshore
  • stations for pressure regulation and measurement
  • CNG gas stations
  • Injection grids for biomethane
  • Metering and control skids for underground gas storage
  • Skids for metering LNG
  • Calibration resources

Applications for FMS

The FPSO, FSO, Platform, MOPU, TLP, FLNG, and FSRU all use offshore metering systems. Oil production facilities, oil refineries, gas processing facilities, petrochemical facilities, terminals, tank farms, and pipelines all use onshore metering systems.

Thus, One of the main issues that mechanical and technological equipment is used to address is the measuring of production. The equipment set known as a “metering skid” is fixed to a platform and used to carry out the tasks of measuring, analysing, controlling, and providing feedback while maintaining the necessary safety standards. Metering skids are used at different places in a pipeline of a plant in the oil and gas sector or another business to measure the flow and do other measuring-related tasks as needed by the plant. The size and type of the FMS are determined by the fluid characteristics, needed system uncertainty, flow rate, pressure drop, maintenance needs, and other factors. For flow metering, a variety of metres are used, including the Positive Displacement metre (PD metre), Turbine metre, Ultrasonic Flowmeter (UFM), Coriolis metre, Orifice metre, V-Cone metre, Ventury metre, etc.
