What is Nimonic 90?

A wrought nickel-chromium-cobalt base alloy known as NIMONIC alloy 90 (UNS N07090/W. Nr. 2.4632) is strengthened by the additions of titanium and aluminium. It has been created as a creep-resisting alloy that may be used at temperatures of up to 920 °C (1688 °F).

The alloy is used for hot-working tools, forgings, ring sections, turbine blades, and discs.

Chemical composition of Nimonic 90

  • Aluminum, Al 1.5%
  • Iron, Fe 58.5% 
  • Chromium, Cr 19.5%
  • Cobalt, Co 18%
  • Titanium, Ti 2.5%

Applications of Nimonic 90

Gas turbine components for high temperature and strength use nimonic 90. Also, It is appropriate for usage in situations where high mechanical stress and temperature are factors including specific engine applications, high-temperature springs and high-performance engine valves. The product is also a popular option for turbocharged applications requiring extremely high boost pressure.

Fabrication of Nimonic 90

  • Forming – Nimonic 90 can be created using any traditional methods.
  • Heat treatment – The heat treatment process for Nimonic 90 involves 8 hours of annealing at 1080°C (1975°F) before cooling.
  • Welding – Shielded metal arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding, gas metal arc welding, and submerged arc welding are all used to weld Nimonic 90
  • Annealing – After 8 hours of annealing at 1080 °C (1975 °F), Nimonic 90 is cooled.
  • Hot working – The hot working range for Nimonic 90 is from 983 to 1177°C (1800 to 2150°F).
  • Cold working – Utilizing common tools, Nimonic 90 can be cold worked.
  • Hardening – Cold working can be used to harden nimonic 90.
  • Machinability –  Using traditional techniques, Nimonic 90 can be machined in the same way that iron-based alloys are. Commercial coolants are used during machining operations. Water-based coolants are used for high-speed activities such as grinding, milling, or turning. For boring, drilling, broaching, or tapping, heavy lubricants are used.
  • Forging – At 983 to 1177°C (1800 to 2150°F), Nimonic 90 is forged.

Thus, high-temperature corrosion and oxidation are well-resisted by the material. Superimphy 90, Pyromet 90, and Udimet 90 are other names for Nimonic 90.
